Artwork Story

Pauletta created this etching during a print workshop with Master Printer, Basil Hall in 2017. This etching was inspired by a visit she made with other artists from Jilamara Arts and Crafts to the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) in April 2017 to mine the archive of the Tiwi collection.

In this work Pauletta has referenced an old bark made by Deaf Tommy Mungatopi, which was about the celestial cycle of moon and stars. The barks in the MAGNT collection were gifted by Sandra Le Brun Holmes and are illustrated in her book The Goddess and the Moon Man: The Sacred Art of the Tiwi Aborigines.

Jilamara translates to design. Jilamara is originally drawn from the body painting which accompanied the Pukumani (funeral) and Kulama (initiation / yam) ceremonies. All the artists living at Milikapiti are drawing on collective Tiwi memory, and the individual expression and aesthetic qualities of each artist’s work is reflective of their personal interpretation of Jilamara.
