Churchill has painted the nawanji [cave] in Ngarrgooroon country, called Red Butte. Churchill’s grandmother took off from Ngarrgooroon country when it was settled by pastoralists and turned into Texas Downs Cattle station. She hid in this cave and her name was Gudbarriya. The station managers never caught her. They say she went crazy here – she grew horns on her head and started getting ‘clever.’ She raised her children here and they all still live here today. Now she belongs part of the Ngarranggarni (Dreamtime) that exists around Warmun.
