Artwork Story

Beyula is telling the story of the Kalinykalinypa or Desert Grevillea flower, a favourite bush food of the Anangu people.

Kalinykalinypa grows in the sandy soils on the plains. The feathery flowers are picked early in the morning and placed in a billycan of water to create honeywater cordial or sucked for their sweet honey dew. More often than not the Anangu moved from flower to flower bending to suck the nectar rather than picking it. This print was made during workshops in collaboration with Cicada Press at the College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales. Papunya Tjupi has developed an ongoing working relationship Michael Kempson, the director of Cicada Press since it’s inception in 2007 through several work shops conducted both in Papunya and in Sydney. This relationship is part of a collaborative partnership of artistic and cultural exchange between the university and the Papunya Tjupi Art Centre. ©Paunya Tjupi Arts
