Artwork Story

Andrew Marrkula lives in Galiwin’ku on Elcho Island with his wife Charmaine and their two sons.

He is a keen painter and in early 2009 developed a passion for reduction wood cut print making during workshops at Elcho Island Arts with printmakers from Basil Hall Edition.

Andrew maintains strong ties to his animal totems, the bush turkey and the catfish. He is also a custodian of Laragitj, the story of the carved and painted hollow log used in tradition Yolngu funeral ceremonies. His father, Frank Djekula (deceased) was a talented artist who taught Andrew to paint.

The print included in the Elcho Elements exhibition tells part of the Laragitj story passed down to Andrew by his father.
