Artwork Story

In the Ngarrangkarni (Dreaming) two men fought over who should marry a young woman. One day a small puppy appeared in the woman’s camp and she decided to look after him. Every day she tried to feed him but he would not eat. One night she and the puppy were alone in the camp. She turned her back on him for a moment, and when she turned around the puppy had turned into a Jarranyin – a large spirit dog the size of a horse. The Jarranyin had been sent by one of the men who had fought over her. The Jarranyin swallowed her up and jumped into a cave at Nine Mile. The Jarranyin still lives in that cave. At night the Jarranyin is sometimes seen traveling through this country, but all that can be seen of him are two round lights like the headlights of a car. Texas is Katie Cox’s country.
