Artwork Story

Troy has made this etching of minimindi (waterlily) in the exuberant style of his late grandmother who was an important artist and cultural knowledge custodian.

The round fruit of minimindi contains many small seeds. The skin is peeled off to expose the orange brown seeds, which are eaten. The stems of flowers can also be eaten, the stem is softened by leaving it in the sun for a short period, the thin outer skin is then peeled off. The tubers are dug up out of the mud, they are washed and roasted on the coals. They have a pleasant starchy taste and are also used medically to treat constipation. © Merrepen Arts 2016

This etching was made as part of a print workshop held at Merrepen Arts in March 2016 with master print maker Basil Hall and facilitated by Nomad Art Productions, Darwin. Ten artists participated in the week-long workshop.
