Artwork Story

Yirrikipayi (Crocodile) Tuwara (tail) are important to the Tiwi people, not only because they inhabit the waters and estuaries of the islands, but because they are also a family totem danced at ceremonies and events.

The Traditional Owners of Wulirankuwu Country on which Milikapiti and Jilamara Arts sits are a larger family group that identify strongly with the Yirrikipayi totem, making it a prominent dance at ceremonies around Milikapiti.

Limited edition collagraph and silkscreen on Hahnemuhle paper. Made in November 2022 during a print workshop at Jilamara with Masterprinter Basil Hall.
