Artwork Story

KAUN TUP HITU motif depicts two sleeping snakes. This motif is said to represent lazy people. It originates from Batuna village in West Amarasi. This motif has re-entered the motif repertoire of Amarasi in recent years. In addition to the serpents a decorative border, known as a tumpal appears in this motif. Tumpal borders are used as a decorative device on the single warp ikat tube skirts (tais runat) produced by Amarasi weavers. These tumpal borders were most likely introduced to the Timor region via Indian silk patola cloths that were traded to the aristocrats and rulers of Timor in order to buy their favour and gain access to rare white sandalwood (Santalum album L.) that grew prolifically across Timor, the Sandalwood Isle.
