Shorty Jangala Robertson was born around 1925 in the Tanami Desert to the north-west of Yuendumu. For many years he lived a nomadic hunter-gatherer life in the desert with his family and did not see white people at all when he was a young man. During the second war, he was relocated to Lajamanu with many other Warlpiri people, but he and his mother walked back to his birthplace, where they stayed until 1967, when he settled
in Yuendumu.
