Rosella Namok is an emerging aboriginal artist from Lockhart River in far north Queensland. She was one of the founding members of the successful Lockhart River Gang, a dynamic and inventive group of young painters and printmakers who emerged in the 1990’s with the support of Art Coordinators Geoff and Fran Barker. Rosella often paints with her fingers – a technique that relates to the tradition of sand drawing and body painting she learned from her elders. Her work is not, as you might expect, figurative or indeed “traditional”, but is highly conceptual and often relates to stories the old people have told her, family connections and relationships.
