Artwork Story

PAUS KENAT motif is a modification of an old motif which decorated belts worn by meo warriors known as Kret Pan Buat. These belts, also known as paus kenat, were often made from buffalo hide consisting of pockets for the storage of ammunition and protective talismans. This Paus Kenat motif has only appeared on woven textiles in recent decades, following the demise of head hunting practices in Timor in the early 20th century. Previously attire belonging to meo warriors and panglima military officials was highly restricted and stored in ceremonial houses, dedicated to clan warfare. Meo attire, such as paus kenat belts was ceremonially ‘heated’ to strengthen its power before entering battle and then ceremonially ‘cooled’ to defuse power and ensure safe keeping upon return to the ceremonial house. This motif was traditionally worn by warriors and military officials of the Amarasi Kingdom.
