Amarasi cloths feature two basic design elements, the hook, kait (D) and the ‘cross’ or isosceles triangle, kret (D). This print features the inner and outer portions of the lozenge, diamond shape of many Amarasi textile motifs with both the kait and kret. The level of intricacy of the ikat textile is determined by the number of kret or kait appearing in the motif. The kait is ubiquitous in West Timorese textile motifs and is considered by some Atoin meto people to represent the joining together of arms in traditional dances; a symbol of community and unity.
