In his paintings, Bulley explores the exotic and bizarre nature of tropical life. “There is something deeply romantic about the tropics; its heat, climatic extremes, rawness and the intensity of its colours”, he observes. In Tales of the Avians, Bulley has combined astute observations of birds and the tropical environment with exotic and poignant references to fables and myths. The works have a warm and tranquil aesthetic, but tinged with allusions to impending death and decay.
