Artwork Story
This work is number eighteen in the 2017-2018 project Dear Gilbert,…. Song for the Ichthyologist, which forms twenty limited editions and four unique works.
Halstead’s Toadfish, (Sphoeroides halsteadi) is featured on page 71 of Ichthyological Illustrations (1957) by Gilbert P Whitley in Proceedings of the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales. Its accepted name is now Reicheltia halsteadi.
Whitley named the species after Dr Bruce W Halstead “for his studies in poisonous and venomous fishes”. With this fish emanating a certain importance, it seemed appropriate to call this image Mr Halstead.
