Artwork Story

This is the country I come from, my Tjukurpa. This is the Tjitji Tjuta Tjukurpa (the creation story of all the children). Before all the children came the sisters were living here inside the cave. They went out and collected kampurarpa tjuta (many desert raisins – a delicious native food). One day the women noticed a strange man at their camp and he called to the sisters for food. The big sister was inside the cave grinding the berries into a paste and mixing with water. She was working hard rungkaraarpa (grinding the berries on a smooth flat rock). The man called out for more food and the younger sisters took it to him. “Nyurampa kangkuru yaltji? (where is your big sister?”) he asked. Each time the sisters took him food he asked for the big sister. When she came he grabbed her and took her for his wife. There is big ceremony for this country. The women paint up their breasts and dance this sacred story. As they dance they sing and swing their wana (digging stick) from side to side in rhythm. © Tjungu Palya Art Centre 2009.
