Artwork Story

Lena was born on Walmanjilukum (Greenvale Station) in (approximately) 1935 and grew upon Old Lissadell Station near Kununurra in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Her skin name is Nyawurru and her language is Gija. Like other young girls she was put to work at an early age. She worked a wide range of jobs including mustering cattle, milking cows and general station duties.

Lena has painted at the Warmun Art Centre since it commenced operation in August 1998 and has developed an international reputation as an original and dynamic painter. Lena in one of eight artists featured in the Musee Du Quai Branly project opened in Paris in 2006.
