Artwork Story

Merran Sierakowski has lived and worked in the Northern Territory since the 1980’s, initially in Alice Springs and then in Darwin from 2000. In 2003 Sierakowski graduated with a degree in Visual Arts from Charles Darwin University. She then worked as an editioning printer at Northern Editions and Basil Hall Editions until 2013. Sierakowski also worked in various roles at The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territorry (MAGNT) and was the acting Curator of Contemporary Art at MAGNT in 2011. In 2013 / 2014 she was Director of Darwin Visual Arts Association.

 

Throughout this time Sierakowski has maintained her practice as a visual artist exhibiting regularly in group shows in Australia and overseas. In 2003 she was awarded the National Hatched Exhibition Prize for a final year student in Perth and has been a regular exhibitor at 24 HR Art: NT Centre for Contemporary Art since 2003. Sierakowski  was a finalist in the TOGART Contemporary Art Award in 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

 

Sierakowski is a prolific artist who consistently addresses social, political and environmental issues. Her creative, ironic and whimsical art works reflect upon issues of human rights, cultural identity and sense of place.Sierakowski’s art practice consists of limited edition prints, digital imagery, sculpture and installations. She uses a variety of techniques incorporating fabric, paper, metal, stone, wire, wood and found objects.
