Tiwi bark paintings are derived from the tunga (bark basket) and in the past paintings on bark have appeared on the insides of Tiwi bark shelters. The production of bark is seasonal and carried our during the wet season – December to April so that the bark is pliable and easily separated from the tree. The stringy bark tree is most commonly used and lies in abundance on both Bathurst and Melville islands.
